Use This Really Cool Trick To Get In The “Zone”

Hi there, Mark J Holland NLP Mind Coach here,

Isn't it amazing how you can stop a 200 ton boat in its tracks by simply dropping an anchor into the sea?

Anchors are extremely powerful and useful when it comes to keeping things in place and preventing them from drifting away.

Well what if I told you there was a way to do this with your positive emotions?

We've all had time in our lives when we felt more confident, more powerful and more skilled in a certain area.

And we've all certainly had those times were we felt like no matter what we tried, nothing seemed to work.  Did you ever notice that in both positive and negative mind states, we seem to build momentum in both cases?

In other words, when we're in a state of positivity, we just seem to build on that and enter what is known as the “zone”. And when we’re in a state of negativity, we feel like “when it rains, it pours”.

Let’s talk about positivity for a moment.

I can't think of a better example of someone being in the “zone” then Ian Thorpe in his winning swimming performance that he put on during the Olympic and Commonwealth games.
It was thought that his winning streak would somehow run out, when in fact he seemed to improve every time.


This kind of positive momentum takes place in people's lives all the time, the problem is that most people don't know how to consciously make it happen whenever they want.

They know the feeling when they experience it and they know they're in the zone but very few people can actually get into that state whenever they choose.

Today I want to share a really interesting NLP Technique called anchoring.

Anchoring will basically allow you to effectively achieve the positive mental state of being in the zone and then remain in that place just as an anchor holds a ship in place.

Anchoring is a very useful tool. As the word implies, anchoring has to do with setting something up that will take firm hold in place.

What makes anchors so powerful is that you can use them to hold positive mental states in place including confidence, attraction, intelligence, humour, etc.

But you can also anchor alders to you to prevent them from drifting away.  Anchors are also talk to the concepts around you and when bringing all of these elements together, you can achieve things like making someone think you are funny even if you are generally not a funny person.

You can also anchor someone into thinking that you are extremely confident; here's how:

Anchoring yourself with confidence happens alone. When you anchor someone to yourself, that happens with someone else.

Do not do this while driving, but what I would like you to do is to close your eyes and remember the time when you were confident. It can be anything.

Examples are a birthday party, walking across the road and doing a good dead or anything else even if basic that you can pick out that made you feel confident.

With your eyes closed, I’d like you to remember yourself in that situation.

Whatever was going on is going on now in your mind. Paint the scene; see the colours and the people, if there are any. Smell the scent in the air. Does it smell good or bad? Does it smell like you are indoors or outdoors, like something new or old? Perhaps you just smell the clean air? What do you hear? Are people applauding, talking? Are their other sounds like those of birds?
Most importantly, how do you feel? How does it feel emotionally? Pretty good?

Of course you do because you accomplished something and that feels good. It does not have to be an accomplishment; it can simply be that today I feel good.

I have some sunglasses on, my hair is fixed up just so and I am wearing certain clothes as I sit in a nice car. I feel good. It can be anything but you are there now, in your memory. At that time when you felt really good, you felt confident. Notice the calmness that comes with that. Once we accomplish something and feel good, we can relax and think that we are worthy and we are a good person. Just kind of soak that in now and feel how good that is.

I now want you to turn everything upside down a bit - The sounds, the smells and everything. Feel it more intensely and feel the clothes on your body. You notice how we are using the three major representational systems, auditory, visual and kinaesthetic. Something to see, hear and feel inside and out.

Also, pay attention to the odours and any other senses that you want. Make everything intense now and especially that sense of feeling good. It feels good to be you right in this moment in your memory. Feel the moment more intensely.

Good. What I want you to do is make the OK sign with your right hand. That means touching the tip of your right index finger to the tip of your right thumb, as if you were saying ‘okay’ to someone.

I want you to also say the word ‘power’ and to do that now. Good. I want you to slowly open your eyes. What we’ve done is installed an anchor for confidence. The next time you feel the lack of power or confidence in any situation, all you have to do is make the okay sign with your right hand and say the word power. That feeling of confidence will come back to you.

The Secret to the Quality of Your Life


Have you ever wondered what causes one person to live a life of happiness, satisfaction, joy and success, and another to live on struggle street and suffer constantly? I want to share a secret with you. 



A unique capacity all humans have is the ability to make decisions. In nearly every moment of our existence we are making decisions. We decide what we are going to wear, what we want for breakfast, which way we drive to work, what we listen too on the radio and on and on. Although it is out of our conscious awareness we are also constantly deciding what to focus on, what to think, how to respond and how to feel.

In order to make decisions we engage in a mental process that runs through a number of steps until the decision is made and action is taken. For each of us this sequence or decision making strategy is mostly out of our conscious awareness- it goes on behind the scenes and under the radar. Also, for each of us this process is created in our own unique way.

But besides decisions in the now, we have been making decisions all our lives. As soon as our mental and intellectual capacities begin to develop, the unconscious decision making process gets underway. Without even being aware of it, at a very young age we begin to decide what we want, what to value, what things mean to us, what to believe, what to think and feel and how to respond to various circumstances. These early decisions become set and when we are older we find ourselves thinking and behaving in preset ways and wondering why. Even the way in which we make decisions was set with a decision.

The quality of our lives is a direct result of our decision making strategy. Some people live extraordinary lives filled with love, abundance and happiness while others struggle for these things day in and day out. I think the difference that makes the difference in the quality of people’s lives is the quality of the decision making strategy that has guided each one of us through every day of our lives.

Here’s why. Throughout life, whenever we are faced with new circumstances or challenges, the mind runs a process to decide how to respond. The mind begins to shuffle through possible responses until it settles on one that is appropriate. Your mind has done this ever since you were extremely young. Once it settles on a response it thinks it appropriate, it puts it into practice. The responses it chooses become habituated- we end up with habitual ways of thinking, feeling and behaving. So what makes the difference in the quality of life?

Some people have excellent decision making strategies. When this process runs, the end result is empowering and enables the individual to respond to situations and circumstances in a way that enhances life. However there are those whose decision making strategy are flawed. The responses chosen at the end of the sequence leave them dis-empowered and at the mercy of their thoughts, their emotions and their life circumstances.

Today, many in the field of psychology and personal development agree that whatever we experience is, on some level, a choice, whether conscious or unconscious. If someone experiences depression, for example, this was likely an unconscious choice of how to respond to a given set of circumstances. The person’s mind ran through the possibilities of how to respond to challenges and the best possibility it found was the one it implemented. When the decision making process ends with such a disempowering result, I would say the strategy is flawed.

So what makes the difference between someone who ends up with resilience and empowerment and someone who ends up with the opposite?

There are two vital factors. The first is creativity. As the mind shuffles through possibilities, how creative is it in generating options? Does it just consider old default options that didn’t work in the past or does it generate new possibilities that might work better in the future?

Imagine going through life constantly making decisions with no access to your creative resources. You will constantly react out of old patterns and end up with the same results you have always ended up with. As you go through life you gain wisdom and experience, you learn from others around you and even have options and possibilities presented to you from books, television and movies. All these things can be drawn on to increase your creative potential for responding to different circumstances.

The most important aspect of the decision making strategy is what I call anti-virus software. When a decision is made and an appropriate response is settled upon, does the mind run a quality control check to make sure this is really the best response? In strategies that lead to disempowerment it does not and there are negative consequences. If the strategy ends with, “Ya, this will do” without a bit of “Hm, what might be wrong with this? Is there anything better?” life will be pretty rocky. This final step weeds out responses that dis-empower like depression, worry, anxiety, frustration, stress, overwhelm etc.

I realized one day as I looked back on the past on how I had become who I had become that in my own decision making strategy all throughout life there was both a lack of creativity and a lack of quality control. This left with responses to the challenges of life that were less empowering. I had to update my internal software and program in a new strategy that would enhance the quality of my life from that point on.

Leaders, executives and entrepreneurs who are exceptional have reached a level of personal mastery that sets them apart. What is it that makes an exceptional leader or manager? World-class leaders demonstrate personal mastery. They are in charge or their thinking and in control of their responses. They respond with the most appropriate response and act with the end in mind. They choose a response that will guide them to the outcome they are seeking… and because of the level of personal mastery they have achieved, they usually get their outcome. They produce results and this gets noticed.

As we each go through life, we acquire habitual ways of thinking, feeling and responding. For the most part this is all the result of chance. Some of us end up with some really great mental and emotional habits. Others find themselves with the short straw, responding constantly in ways that make life tough. And we take this habitual ways of responding into the workplace.

The good news is that we can become the CEO of our own minds. We can begin to consciously redesign how we are, empowering ourselves with better choices for how to respond to the situations that arise. We can take control of our thinking and our emotions and empower ourselves to produce the results we want.

When we become the CEO of your own mind and begin to re-engineer yourself consciously, you will end up with something much better than what you would have ended up with by chance.

What good is a corporation without a CEO? Essentially this is how most of us have been living for the majority of our lives. We are on automatic. We respond to life out of outdated patterns and think and feel and act in ways that no longer serve us. This is a great way for You Inc. to go bankrupt.

You have four powers. First you have the power to think-the power to conceive, imagine, analyze and judge. You have the power to feel, to emote and enter various states, from joy and calm to anger and frustration. Next you have the power to express- the power to verbalize, speak and communicate. Finally you have the power to act- the ability to choose behaviours and act in the world. In order to be successful in any endeavour, all four of these powers must be aligned. If they are out of alignment you will produce results that you don’t want and wonder why. If you are not in control of these four powers but instead leave them to chance, how can you align them to produce the results you want.
