Is Positive Thinking really worth It? - Mark J Holland NLP Mind Coach

“There’s only one corner of the universe you can be certain of improving, and that’s your own self.”
- Aldous Huxley

As you practice using positive thinking, you will find that things begin to change for you. Sometimes the change is so gradual you don’t notice anything at all, until one day someone else tells you that you seem different. They may ask if you’ve gotten a new outfit, changed your hair, lost weight, or won the lottery. Tapping in to positive thinking not only makes you happier, it also makes you more attractive; the kind of person others want to be around.

Now that you’ve had some experience, you might recognize some of the common signs of positively charged people. Check out this list of things you have to look forward to.

You Know You’re a Positive Thinker When:

• Your grueling drive to work goes by so quickly, you wonder why it ever bothered you in the first place.

• The clerk at the grocery store gives you the wrong change, you point it out with a smile- and she happily corrects the mistake.

• You waited in line at the post office for twenty-five minutes on your lunch hour...and your life didn’t end.

• The new part for your car finally arrived at the garage after a week on backorder, but it was the wrong one. You were so nice about accepting the delay when the garage called that they offered you a substantial discount on your repair bill.

• Every time you catch a glimpse of yourself in a mirror, you’re smiling- and you don’t think you look like a moron.

• You put the oven on too high and burned dinner...then wound up having something even better than you’d planned.

• Suddenly you have a lot more free time on your hands, and plenty of things to do with it- plus enough energy to do them.

• The last time you thought the word can’t was in the phrase I can’t believe all these great things are happening to me.

Positive thinking has the power to change your life, as long as you believe it does. As you continue to use positive thinking techniques, you will find you don’t have to put much effort into achieving what you want.

Are Your Thoughts Negative or are Your Thoughts Positive Discover how to Change Your Mind, and Change Your Life with Mark J Holland NLP Mind Coach

“Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.”
- Abraham Lincoln

When tapping in to the power of positive thinking, the most important step is to create a mindset that allows you to think positively. Once you have pulled the weeds from your mental garden, you can begin to sow the seeds that will anchor your new way of life.

Creating a positive mindset takes training. In much the same manner as runners train their bodies to endure long periods of sustained activity, you can train your mind to sustain positive thought, and naturally defer to pleasant or optimistic paths. At first, thinking positively may feel awkward or ridiculous (particularly if you’re the type of person who believes perky morning people should be shot). Keep in mind, though, that it does get easier the more you do it, and eventually, sustaining a positive mindset will be as natural as breathing.

Like any training program, there are steps you can follow to achieve your optimal results: in this case, a positive mental outlook. You may recall that it takes 21 days to form a new habit (When you make an appointment with an NLP Coach it can be done over a few sessions). Therefore, you should perform each of the steps for at least 21 consecutive days. You can take on one step at a time, or implement the whole program; just be sure you aren’t leaving anything out.

Step up to your mental treadmill, and let the training begin!

Warm-up: Shake Out Negative Kinks

When you think about it, it’s obvious: negative is the opposite of positive, so in order to instil a positive mindset you need to get rid of negative thoughts. Sounds simple enough, right? The process is an easy one, but it takes practice to make it stick.

The first step in clearing negativity from your mind is to really pay attention to your thoughts. Whenever the words can’t, shouldn’t, wouldn’t, won’t, not, or never enter your mind, concentrate on what you’re thinking and turn it around to eliminate the negative wording. For example:

Your spouse and children are gone for a few hours, and you have the place to yourself. You’re indulging in one of your favourite activities. In the midst of your enjoyment, you start to feel guilty. You think: I really shouldn’t be doing this. I could be getting started on the project I promised someone else I’d take care of. Your enjoyment starts to fade, and you stop what you’re doing, resentful that you have to tackle this boring project when you have so little time to yourself...

Does this sound familiar? The moments you hear yourself think shouldn’t, stop right there and change direction. In this scenario, you might instead think I really should be doing this. Taking time for me is important, and when I’m relaxed and satisfied I will be able to do a better job on that project I promised someone else. I’m so glad I got the opportunity to do something I enjoy.

Try to do this every time a negative thought creeps in. The more often you banish negative ideas from your mind, the easier positive thinking will become. You will be more relaxed and receptive to positive solutions.

Work Those Mouth Muscles

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a smile is worth a million. The power of a smile is incredible. Even if you don’t feel like smiling, the simple act of lifting the corners of your mouth can help you lift your entire spirit and find something worth smiling about. Some of the greatest self-help advice out there comes from those who advocate “fake it until you make it.” This is especially true when it comes to positive thinking, and faking a smile goes a long way toward producing the genuine thing. You may end up laughing at yourself merely because you know you have nothing to smile about.

Another great thing about smiles- they’re highly contagious. A smile spreads faster than a cold in a daycare. Most people can’t help smiling back when someone casts a happy expression their way. This is a simple and exciting theory that you can test out for yourself. Go to any public place and start smiling at random people, then keep track of how many smile back (even suspicious smirking counts!). You’ll likely find that 9 out of 10 of your targets return your joyful expression to some small degree, and you’ve probably just made their day a little brighter, too.

Learning to smile on demand is an important step in developing a permanently positive mindset. One good technique for summoning smiles is to choose a happy memory that never fails to fill you with good feelings. Keep this memory at the front of your mental catalogue, and access it whenever you feel a case of the blues coming on. It may not solve your problems, but it will at least make you smile- which in turn helps you relax and take an objective look at your situation. Smiling often creates a mental cue for the foundation of positive thinking and helps prime the pumps of happiness.

You should also spend a little time in front of the mirror observing your own expressions. At first this practice may seem uncomfortable or downright silly, but smiling at your own reflection has a positive effect on your psyche. You can even practice different smile variations: the amused smirk; the close-lipped leg-pulling smile; the toothy grin; the laugh-out-loud open-mouthed smile. Think of it as an Olympic event...it’s your personal Smile Marathon, and you’ll win the gold every time!

Do Some Reps
When developing a positive mindset, the importance of repetition cannot be understated. Exercise is the key to building any muscle, so by viewing your optimistic outlook as a muscle, you can develop a reserve of happiness that will carry you through the most gruelling events.

This is not to say you shouldn’t worry about anything. Ignoring troubling events won’t make them go away. It’s important to face your problems while looking at them through a positive lens. The positive mindset itself doesn’t erase your troubles. It is simply a tool to allow you to find a solution without burning yourself out through stress and anxiety. You will find it far easier to solve problems when you can step back and look at the situation in a positive light; and often the solution will present itself with little effort, simply because your mind is clear and open enough to notice it.

The more you practice positive thinking, the more naturally it will come to you। You will find that frustrating everyday occurrences dwindle to minor nuisances, and eventually cease to trouble you altogether. Keep practicing positive thought processes, and you will be well on your way to a low-stress, high-energy lifestyle that will allow you to accomplish anything you desire.

Cool-Down: Feel the Burn

As you come to the end of your daily positive thinking workout, look back and reflect on your progress. Was there anything that seemed easier to you? Were you able to find a faster solution to a problem that would have ordinarily eaten up a lot of time in worrying? Do you feel more relaxed and ready to try again tomorrow?

Congratulate yourself on your victories. By reinforcing your accomplishments, you help to firm the foundation of your new positive mindset and lay the groundwork for your success. Every positive thought brings you one step closer to your ultimate goal. You will soon realize that you can do this, and you will have much greater enthusiasm as you proceed.

Now that you’ve planted the seeds for positive thinking, the next step is to learn how to care for your mental garden. In my next blog you will discover the fuel you need to nurture your seeds and coax new shoots from the soil of your mind. Meanwhile, keep pumping that positive thinking iron!

How to Cope with Change in Organisations - NLP Life Coaching Australia

Change seems to be a constant for businesses today. Mostly, that change is about communication – telling people what they need to do differently. Rewriting business processes or changing branding is easy compared to the task of changing people’s attitudes and behaviours. Many organisations have ongoing culture change programs, trying to change people’s attitudes, but for the most part they’re missing the most obvious point – customers infer attitude from behaviour. In other words, a company’s culture isn’t some ethereal, mystery quality – it’s what happens when your staff’s behaviour interacts with your customers’ beliefs and expectations.
The behaviour of the people in a company is an inherent part of the branding of that company. In fact, logos and slogans are not a brand – only the service that people deliver is a brand. If you want a demonstration of this, put on your gardening clothes, go into a BMW dealership and ask for a test drive. The attitude of the sales people may be out of place for a different company, but it’s part of the branding that’s been cultivated over the years.
Many consultants say that they use NLP Life Coaching Australia for change management. In fact, what they are doing is using NLP Life Coaching Australia to help individuals through change. They are not using NLP Life Coaching Australia to change the organisation.
NLP Life Coaching Australia can be used to plan and communicate change and to make that change easy to achieve. The biggest problem with change in organisations is the way that the change managers draw attention to it. The simple fact is that the majority of people want things to stay as they are and get better – most people do not want radical change. I’ve personally worked for many years in one of the fastest changing and most turbulent industries and have been through countless major change programs – at least one per year.
What has been common throughout these change programs is that the change has been announced as radical or revolutionary, and that the employees have been told that what they’re doing is all wrong and they have to change to survive. You know that in reality, it’s not true. If the company didn’t change, it would still survive. On the other hand, the company is changing every single day, depending on how you look at it.
NLP Life Coaching Australia will help you to communicate change in a way that helps people to accept it and make it happen.

How can NLP Life Coaching Australia Dramatically Improve My Marketing Efforts?

As with sales, marketing is an area where NLP Life Coaching can be readily applied.

In particular, NLP Life coaching Australia can help the marketer determine effective strategies for building appropriate long term relationships with customers. Developing creative ideas allows marketing teams to approach a situation from unexpected angles and reach fresh insights to transform their customer experience.
Well formed outcomes can be used to set the objectives of any marketing plan, campaign or strategy. Building a clear model of who the target audiences are, and what precisely they are to do as a result of the marketing activities undertaken, ensures that all activities are effectively focussed and measured. It is also worth being aware of how your own presuppositions can influence your thinking – and that of your customers.
Many organisations are moving towards ensuring that their marketing activities are media-neutral, increasing the effectiveness of any integrated campaign. Here, having a clear sense of what story you want to tell has particular value. With these stories, using the Milton Model helps you build stories that allow your customers to relate what you are communicating into their own subjective experience – and so personalise your product or service offering into their situation.
Mass customisation is becoming increasingly important for online media. The challenge has always been collecting customer data to enable personalisation, whereas a different approach is to convey information using a linguistic framework into which the customer puts their own subjective experience, needs, desires and so on. In much the same way that a politician delivers a speech that appeals to a wide range of interests, the Milton Model can be used to create the structure of language necessary to appeal to a diverse audience.
Of course, NLP’s language tools can be used to write compelling advertising or PR copy, but this can be read as overly false. In any case, NLP Life Coaching Australia is built upon two-way communication, and so is a tool for building relationships rather than exerting influence. If you and your customers have roughly aligned goals, NLP Life Coaching Australia will help both of you get what you want. If your goals are contrary to or even detrimental to your customers, NLP Life Coaching Australia will not help you and may make things worse.

What Makes NLP Business Coaching Different from Standard Business Coaching?

Coaching is an obvious and popular choice for people trained in NLP business Coaching. It’s easy to see how NLP Business Coaching tools and techniques translate easily into personal coaching, and that’s only a step away from business coaching.
NLP Business coaching is different to other forms coaching frameworks in at least two major ways; firstly, NLP Business Coaching does not offer a prescriptive framework and is based solely on the client’s own resources and ambitions. Secondly, the NLP modelling technology makes it very easy to develop behavioural skills to a high degree of performance. This makes NLP business coaching ideally suited for sports, sales, recruitment and other jobs that have specific behavioural patterns that underpin success.
Since NLP business coaching comprises tools for personal change, a NLP business coach is able to help a client make changes that are not achievable with other forms of coaching. For example, you can either spend hours with non directive questioning to arrive at an insight or you can go straight there and make a belief change with NLP business coaching. Some coaches would say that the non directive approach is best because the client got there in their own time, and I would say that coaches who say that charge by the hour.
You can imagine how NLP business coaching can help a golfer to make a perfect swing every time, or a tennis player to maintain a peak state throughout the game. In sales, how would it help to be able to map out your customer’s unconscious decision process and use it to help them to buy? In recruitment, how would it help to maintain a highly focussed state throughout a day’s sales calls?
Many coaching schools and methodologies prescribe a strict formula or process for coaching. With NLP business coaching, the process is simply this:
  1. Find out what the client wants to achieve
  2. Remove the barriers to their success
  3. Get out of the way
So, if you’re the kind of professional person who already has clear goals and a wealth of experience and knowledge, then those prescriptive frameworks can seem very limited. The NLP business coaching approach can help you to remove the one or two obstacles that stand in the way of runaway success.
If there’s one tool in NLP business coaching that can really help you to coach effectively, it’s the Meta model. When a client is talking through a situation where they’re not getting the results they want, all you need to do is ask the right questions. The client will do 99% of the work themselves if you are able to ask the client questions that give them the insight they need.

A Powerful Tool To Create Desire In Anyone…..

Hi Mark J Holland here, NLP Mind Coach,

Have you ever had a dream that felt so real that when you woke up, you thought the dream was your reality?

The reason this happens is because the mind does not understand the difference between reality and imagination.

In other words, it cannot distinguish the difference between what you visualize in your mind as opposed to what you actually experience in life.

This is extremely powerful knowledge.  And the reason I say this is because all things in life are nothing more than energy in vibration.  And energy attracts energy of the same kind.  Therefore, if you can effectively visualize yourself doing something, you will at some point attract that reality into your life.

The second reason why this fact is so powerful is because every time we do something we become better at it.  Experience enables us to be better prepared every time we come across a challenging encounter or situation.

And since the mind can't tell the difference between a “real” situation and one that you've imagined, if you continuously visualize that situation, you will be well-prepared for it when it takes place in reality.

Now imagine how powerful it would be if you could help other people create a crystal-clear vision of themselves in the future doing what you want them to do.  This would be extremely helpful in influencing people and gaining compliance.

Here's another empowering article by world renowned NLP Trainer Steve G. Jones. I thought you might enjoy something called future pacing.

Take a look:

When it comes to Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), two of the most powerful techniques you can use are pacing and mirroring.

I want to tell you about future pacing.  Future pacing, essentially, is when you take the person that you're speaking with and mentally bring them into a future event, where they can clearly see themselves doing something.

If you remember from a previous article when I spoke about tapping into people's representational systems and determining whether they're auditory kinaesthetic or visual, you can now use future pacing to help you once you figure out which category a person falls into.

For example, let's assume that you're talking with someone who is an auditory thinker and you are trying to sell them a car. One of the most effective ways to get them to purchase that car is to tell them to imagine themselves in that brand-new car driving down the highway listening to the rev of the engine and their favourite music playing in the background.

If you are dealing with a visual person, you would tell them to imagine themselves driving the car seeing the sunset and watching the trees blow in the wind as they got closer to the beach.

And if they were kinaesthetic, you could tell them to imagine what it would feel like to be in the car smelling the brand-new leather and feeling the sun gently warm their skin as they cruise down the highway.

You have now done two things; first you have begun to align their thinking with the future reality that you want.  So the attraction process has now begun.  The second thing that you have done is by tapping into their representational system and creating a presentation based on that information. You have created a strong desire that this person will now want to bring to reality.

You have now embedded change into this person's future and you have given them the opportunity to experience what you're offering in a positive manner before they actually get to that point.

Now, the key is to show what you have to offer can help fill the desire that you have created by helping the person visualize the future.

If you can effectively do that, the person with whom you're speaking to will be genuinely interested in what you have to offer, because they see value in it.  And the reason why they see value in it is because you've created a desire within their mind and presented the solution that will help them in the form of whatever it is that you're offering.

Leave Behind Stress and Overwhelm for Good and Take Powerful Control of Your Emotions and Your Life

Leave Behind Stress and Overwhelm for Good and Take Powerful Control of Your Emotions and Your Life Are you constantly stressed? Overwhelmed? Feel like it’s just too much?

Dear Reader,

If you’re looking for a fast and effective way to beat stress and overwhelm and take back control of your life, read on.

• Do you feel like there’s just way too much on your plate?
• Constantly feeling overwhelmed with tasks and responsibilities?
• Do you feel like you’re more sensitive to stress than those around you?
• Do you feel like you just can’t handle it and maybe you don’t have what it takes?

If you’re looking for a way to beat stress and overwhelm and take back control of your life, read on.

Let me know if this sounds like you:

The simple truth is, you’re stressed! You’re overwhelmed. It’s as if all the pressures are looming above you and you don’t know what to do.

Each day you get up with a mass of things to do. Things pile up at work, there’s always more to do, and it’s like it never ends. It’s as if there’s just not enough hours in the day. You’re constantly worried about deadlines and the demands put on you.

The pressures you’re under are weighing down on you. The challenges and setbacks you face seem to crush you down. People problems take a toll on you and in the face of it all, you feel powerless. Sometimes you feel like you can’t handle it and maybe you don’t have what it takes. You want to take back control but it’s just too much… and it’s as if there is nothing you can do.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.

You Can Go From Stressed and Overwhelmed to Powerfully in Control of Your Emotions and Your Life

Stress is not something you have to live with. Constant stress and overwhelm is something that can be resolved, and faster than you think. Using a cutting-edge coaching methodology with solid track record of producing rapid results, you can turn your stress and overwhelm into the confidence, focus and power you need to get things done effectively and efficiently.

But If you’ve got doubts, and I don’t blame you. It’s because we live in a world that teaches us that stress is part of life. We have to cope with it, manage it, reduce it and relieve it. Stress is a fact of life.

But it’s not true!

Humans were not designed to live in today’s world… and so the way we respond to “stressors” is completely inappropriate and ineffective. To be effective in today’s world, we need to unlearn our outdated and habitual responses and replace them with new ones that will enable us to get things done with confidence and power.

On top of that, stress is not a thing, it is a process. Stress can’t happen without your participation. Stress management means waiting until it’s too late. Instead of coping with stress, what you need to do is cope powerfully with what you have to get done in the world

What if you could stop stressing yourself out, become powerfully effective and impressively productive?

Imagine being able to:

Remain calm and confident no matter what!
■Get things done quickly and effectively, on time every time
Organize your mind and life so you’re always in control
Turn paralysis into action so you change your to-do’s into powerful results
■Discover the real problem and eliminate it, so you get up each day with unstoppable Confidence
■Free yourself of unnecessary worry and doubt and be someone who makes things happen
I will help you figure out how you stress yourself out and stop it for good. Imagine remaining calm and resourceful no matter what. How much more effective would you be? How much more would you enjoy your work and your life?

Are You Missing this Skill in Business?

Whether an entrepreneur, executive or manager, to succeed in business today you need to be exceptional. You need to respond to challenges with the best possible response to attain the outcome you want. You need to be an expert communicator to influence and motivate your employees, awaken their potential and inspire them to greatness. You need full control over your mind and emotions to empower you to face any situation instead of leaving your responses to chance.

Leaders, executives and entrepreneurs who are exceptional have reached a level of personal mastery that sets them apart. They have gotten in contact with that inner executive and developed the ability to run their own brains so that they can choose the most appropriate responses to any situation, allowing them to attain the results they want.

But today, most of us are victims of stress and under a vast amount of pressure. We come to work with fears, worries and insecurities and when we face trying situations, we respond automatically with anger and frustration. On the surface we seem to have it together, but beneath a shining exterior there are a few dragons lurking. These dragons keep us from being exceptional… and how successful will a company without exceptional people be? To succeed in business executives, managers and entrepreneurs need to have reached a level of personal mastery so they can be all they can be and produce extraordinary results.

Imagine the leaders of a great company- if it is fear, worry, stress and old hurts that are driving her behaviour, how far will the company go? How effectively will she be able to motivate and inspire employees?

What is it that makes an exceptional leader or manager? World-class leaders demonstrate personal mastery. They are in charge or their thinking and in control of their responses. They respond with the most appropriate response and act with the end in mind. They choose a response that will guide them to the outcome they are seeking… and because of the level of personal mastery they have achieved, they usually get their outcome. They produce results and this gets noticed.

As we each go through life, we acquire habitual ways of thinking, feeling and responding. For the most part this is all the result of chance. Some of us end up with some really great mental and emotional habits. Others find themselves with the short straw, responding constantly in ways that make life tough. And we take this habitual ways of responding into the workplace.

The good news is that we can become the CEO of our own minds. We can begin to consciously redesign how we are, empowering ourselves with better choices for how to respond to the situations that arise. We can take control of our thinking and our emotions and empower ourselves to produce the results we want.

When we become the CEO of your own mind and begin to re-engineer yourself consciously, you will end up with something much better than what you would have ended up with by chance.

What good is a corporation without a CEO? Essentially this is how most of us have been living for the majority of our lives. We are on automatic. We respond to life out of outdated patterns and think and feel and act in ways that no longer serve us. This is a great way for You Inc. to go bankrupt.

You have four powers. First you have the power to think-the power to conceive, imagine, analyze and judge. You have the power to feel, to emote and enter various states, from joy and calm to anger and frustration. Next you have the power to express- the power to verbalize, speak and communicate. Finally you have the power to act- the ability to choose behaviours and act in the world. In order to be successful in any endeavour, all four of these powers must be aligned. If they are out of alignment you will produce results that you don’t want and wonder why. If you are not in control of these four powers but instead leave them to chance, how can you align them to produce the results you want.

Using systems like Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and NLP Mind Coaching, you can develop the power of your own inner executive. You can take charge or your mental and emotional programming and redesign who you are. So who do you want to be? Become the engineer of who you are and create something better than you ended up with by chance.

Dreaming to Live

I have always been put off by the idea of having a “job”. The word itself has negative connotations; it’s something you have to do and you don’t want to do. Most people can’t stand the thought of Monday morning and can’t wait until Friday, when all that “work” is over for a couple of days. I always thought it was better to be poor and doing what I loved than wealthy and doing something I hated.

So many of us find ourselves stuck doing a job we don’t like because we have to pay the bills. We have grown accustomed to the steady paycheck and frankly we feel comfortable with the routine and security. Even though we want to pursue a dream, we don’t want to step out of our comfort zone. Comfort and routine have taken the place of self-actualization.

All of us have dreams but many of us don’t have the courage to pursue them. We have been told since childhood “that’s impossible” and we decided to believe it. We don’t want to take risks or make sacrifices, and our fear of failure keeps us stuck where we are. We feel we aren’t able or that we don’t deserve it or we feel guilty about going our own way or having more success than our friends, family members or parents. Instead of believing in our dreams, somehow we have come to have more faith and conviction in the belief that our dreams are impossible.

Some of us put our dreams on hold out of responsibility to our family. We want to provide our loved ones with security and avoid taking risks, even though they would support us in pursuing our vision if we expressed it to them. If it’s not about family, we justify the status quo with the belief that “my company and my colleagues need me. What would they do without me?” So we put responsibility to others before our dreams, even though the contribution we could make if we live our passion would be much greater than the value we add when we do something we hate because we feel we have to.When we do a job because we feel we have to, life loses meaning. We find ourselves depressed and disillusioned, and rightly so. The emotions are a signal letting us know that our circumstances do not match our values and aspirations.

Oscar Wilde said “the supreme object of life is to live. Few people live. It is true life only to realize one’s own perfection, to make one’s every dream a reality.” Dreams make life worth living. They give meaning to existence and guide us to unleashing our full potential. Which leaves one question: are you really living?

I believe we all have something unique and something of value to offer to the world. We all have unique talents or interests, and we all have something we are passionate about… but we don’t believe we could make into a living. The happiest, most fulfilled and most successful people in the world have taken their passion and turned it into a livelihood. Some believe we each have a calling, but I believe we each have the power to choose our calling.

When we turn our passion into something that adds value to others’ lives and something people are willing to pay for, life becomes what Deepak Chopra calls the “continued expansion of happiness and the progressive realization of worthy goals.” They say that money buys happiness… but really, happiness buys money.

One of my favourite examples of someone pursuing a dream is the story of Debbie Macomber. Debbie wanted to be a writer. For 2 ½ years she typed in her kitchen each morning after the kids went to school. One day her husband Wayne decided it could go on no longer, telling her they could not survive any longer on his income alone. Distraught she remained awake all night. When her husband asked her what was wrong she told him she was convinced she could make it as a writer.

After a long silence, he told her “All right honey, go for it.” For another 2 ½ years her family struggled financially. And it paid off. Now Debbie has written over 100 books, some have been New York Times best-sellers and 3 have sold for movies. There are over sixty million copies of her books in print. Needless to say, after years of penny pinching, the family is quite comfortable now (no need to mention their 7000 square-foot mansion).

So are you doing what you love? What is your vision? How many reasons do you have for why you cannot pursue it?

Self-actualizers pursue their passions. They take something they absolutely love to do and they find a way to use it to add value to other’s lives. They love what they do so much that they can’t believe people pay them to do it. And they thrive. It’s not about working toward some destination, but doing what they love and enjoying the journey.

Most people don’t think big enough. Instead of being driven by possibility, we are held back by our own limitations and limited perceptions.

What is your “impossible” dream?

No More Positive Thinking!

All too often , in an effort to help out in the face of challenges, our friends, family members and colleagues tell us to “Think positive,” a piece of advice that we hear with disdain as we consider how unhelpful this suggestion is. If things are not positive why think positively? we ask ourselves. It sounds like another way to lie to yourself.

The term “positive thinking” is thrown around a lot these days by professionals in the growing personal development industry who toot its benefits, and by more traditional psychologists who are not quite so optimistic about it.

When doing individual coaching for depression, anxiety and self-esteem, I avoid the term. Instead, I help my clients learn to do something that is much better than just think positively.

What exactly does the term “positive thinking” mean? If you stop to consider it for a moment, the term “positive thinking” is extremely general and has little inherent meaning. My interpretation of it will be different from yours and if we ask twenty other people, we will get twenty different responses. How can the advice “think positive” be of any help when we don’t know what specifically it means?

When told to think positively, many argue that it is better to be realistic. Yet there are problems with this too. We each have our own unique model of the world, our own individual perception of what is real and what is possible, and often we adopted a certain way of thinking at a young age that stays with us into our later years. At some time in the past, usually when very young, when we had less experience and less wisdom, we formed certain beliefs or adopted them from others. Our most deeply held beliefs and perceptions often come out of significant emotional events, difficult or even traumatic events from which we made generalizations (decisions actually) about the way the world works. Due to this, thinking realistically often means sticking to an outdated way of thinking and it turns into thinking pessimistically.

I suggest we forget positive thinking (and “realistic” thinking too). What we need to do is rethink our thinking and think in the most useful and empowering way. We need to update our internal programming, let go of the limiting decisions we have made in the past and adopt beliefs that serve us. To think in the most useful way, we need to take responsibility for the decisions we make and the meaning we give to things.

Limiting beliefs about identity and capability are extremely prevalent in our society. A belief is essentially a command to the nervous system. If I believe that people don’t like me, for example, I will act in accordance with this belief and find evidence in my reality that people indeed do not like me. When you believe it, you see it. It is the notorious self-fulfilling prophecy. What about when it comes to our capabilities? If you believe you can’t, you will not even try. If you think you can’t, you certainly won’t. I could cite numerous examples, but how about this one: Bill gates would never have been able to create the worldwide software giant if he woke up every morning and said, “This will never work!”

A great example of beliefs at work is in the area of health. A person who accepts a doctor’s terminal diagnosis gives up and fails to take action that could increase their chances of survival. Yet a patient who believes they can overcome a fatal condition will act in accordance with that belief, doing whatever they can to get well.

When we face challenges, we make decisions as to what they mean. “I failed, and that means I will never be successful” is one such example. Yet a “failure” could be interpreted in an infinity of different ways. Failure can be an opportunity to learn something new and make an important distinction that will lead to success, and even more success than ever imagined. A perfect example of this is Lance Armstrong. Despite enormous challenges, Lance Armstrong became a cycling legend. He took the obstacles he faced and gave them an empowering meaning. He claims that cancer actually helped him win the Tour de France! What meaning are you choosing to give to things?

To become empowered, ask yourself, “How do I need to think to accomplish my aims and to feel the way I want?” If you do this, your thoughts (some 60 000 a day!) will be your allies instead of your enemies.

When you want to help someone out in times of trouble, instead of telling them to think positively, help them with specific advice about how to think. You might want to trying asking questions that direct thinking such as, “How will things change if you focus on the solution?” or when the problem is a belief, something like “What if you (decide to) believe you can?”

What old beliefs will you leave behind today and to replace with new ones that will lead you to more happiness and success than you ever thought possible?

How the mind works: Understanding Your Mental Software

When we hear the term “mind” we often think of the brain, but the mind is much more than the brain. The brain is the hardware while the mind is the software it runs. When you are dead, your brain will still be there (for a while), but your mind will not.

So just what is the mind? If we are going to get any use out of the mind, we need a definition that is useful. Although the word “mind” leads us to believe the mind is a thing, it is not. The mind is label we have given to an active and dynamic process of thinking, perceiving and experiencing. The term “mind” refers to a never-ending flow of information processing. The mind is never static. It is a constant stream of sensory input, thoughts, ideas and perceptions. It’s a continuous dance of information, a ceaseless stream of awareness in which almost anything can be swept up.
What exactly goes on in this stream of awareness? From moment to moment you receive vast amounts of information from the outside world through your senses. Your awareness jumps from point to point in your external experience, sorting for what is important to you as your minds engages in the process of interpreting and evaluating the incoming data. External information is filtered through beliefs, attitudes and memories and associations are activated. Emotions arise and generate responses; speech, actions and behaviour.

On the screen of your mind you flash images, snapshots and run movies. You hear sounds and voices and often narrate the film with your own voice. The pictures and sounds of your mind occur all in sequence, one after the other, which results in an ever changing flux of experience which changes from moment to moment.

Directing and guiding this stream of awareness is a system. We can think of the mind as system that directs our information processing. This system is made up of numerous elements, all interacting and influencing one another to generate our experience. The way we experience the world is through the process of representing, sequencing and ordering the information we acquire from the outside world.

The system of information processing we call “the mind” can also be called our internal reality. We each have an external reality- the environment we live in, the circumstances of our lives – and we each have our own unique internal reality. It is this internal reality that lies behind emotions, behaviour and results.

Our inner reality is far from a random mess of mental chaos. Human subjective experience has a structure. Knowing the specific elements that make up the structure of our internal reality enables us to alter the structure so that it serves us better.

For thousands of years we have believed that the mind was complicated and elusive; a mystery waiting to be unravelled, a cipher waiting to be cracked. We now know that the mind is much simpler than we once thought. When we know the building blocks of human subjective experience, the elements that make up what we call “mind,” we can change them.

The components of a system can be reorganized. The processes we use to encode information and the sequence data can be optimized to produce desired results. When we know the elements of a system we can change the system so it functions more effectively and efficiently. When we know what is going on behind the scenes of behaviour and emotion, we can change it and transform our experience.

For hundreds of years the field of psychology tried to find a way to change emotions and behaviour. The methods devised made great theories, but never really resulted in much change. Some of the theories made a lot of sense, but practice didn’t seem to yield any results. The advocates of different psychological theories over the past hundred years spent more time arguing over theories than trying to find something that really worked. It took up until the late 1970s before a model that was actually useful and practical was devised.

Throughout our lives we have fought with our emotions and struggled to change habits and behaviours with little or no success. We have been attempting to change the symptom of some cause without getting to the source. Trying to change with willpower alone is like trying to weed a garden without getting at the roots and wondering why the weeds keep growing back. We wonder why change is so difficult, but it’s not that change is difficult, it’s that we’ve been going about it the wrong way. Trying to shovel the snow of your driveway with a rake isn’t going to work very well, so why not trying something else? To change emotions and behaviours we need to step behind the scenes and peek into our internal experience to see what is going on behind our emotions and behaviours. We need to look beyond the surface and find the source.

Emotions and behaviours don’t come out of nowhere. They result naturally from our internal programming. For whatever emotions you feel and whatever behaviours you produce, your programming must be perfectly optimized to produce that result. If you are depressed, your mind has been programmed to produce depression. If anxiety is your constant companion, your mind has been programmed to produce anxiety. If you find yourself lacking confidence, or giving into to self-sabotage, it’s because your mental software permits it. And if you live a life of joy and success, it’s because your internal programming has been optimized to generate that result.

Problems are learned, and if they can be learned, they can be unlearned. Change your programming and you change the result.

Although you never go anywhere without your mind, most of what goes on in the mind remains a mystery to you. Why? Because much of what occurs in your mind is out of awareness. Our mental programs operate behind the scenes, out of consciousness, and it is those aspects of our functioning that operate out of awareness that lead to emotions and behaviours. To put on a great show and produce the results we need to navigate in the world, there is a whole crew of things going on backstage. All we see is the final performance.

If you open the task manager on a computer you can see all of the applications running. When you look at this list you see precisely the programs that you know are operating. In your mind, these would correspond to the things you are aware of at any given moment. However, click on the list of processes and you get a whole array of programs running behind the scenes. There are far more in this list than in the list of applications running and when you look at this list of processes, you can’t even identify what most of them are. They are operating in the background, out of awareness, permitting you to think, feel, act and react to your experience of life.
In order to reprogram our minds and upgrade our mental software to produce superior results, we must begin by bringing those hidden programs to the surface. Once we know what is operating in the mind we can run some antivirus software, uninstall outdated programs and upgrade where possible. Most of us race to have the latest cell phone and the newest gadget, but why do we keep running obsolete mental software?

Don’t worry, when you begin to explore your mind you won’t find inner demons waiting to be freed or terrible things wanting to bubble up as Freud would have you believe. You will, however, very likely find some old programs that you may no longer want. Remember, they are just programs and if you installed them, you can uninstall them.

The Principles of NLP

NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) is a set of techniques which are used to have a positive effect on our behaviour and communication. The following article explains the principles, and how these relate to the modern working environment.

Neuro Linguistic Programming consists of 4 operational principles:

NLP Principle 1 - Achievement Planning

The successful application of Neuro Linguistic Programming begins with first establishing what you want to achieve. It is only by doing this that you can successfully put in place a strategic NLP plan. This avoids wandering aimlessly and gives you a focus for your attentions and a strategy for achieving your goals and targets.

NLP Principle 2 - Target Awareness

Once you have an NLP plan in place, it is important to make sure that you are on track towards achieving it. Being aware of exactly where you are is vital in order to address your shortcomings and ensure that you do not stray from the established Neuro Linguistic Programming plan. In sensory terms, awareness relates to making sure that your actions elicit the correct response from your clients or co-workers. Reading people's body language and facial expressions, for example will allow you to establish whether or not your words and actions have the desired effect on your subjects.

NLP Principle 3 - Behavioural Flexibility

In order to achieve your NLP goals, it is important that you have flexibility in your actions and have the ability to vary your behaviour until you get the reaction that you want. It is clear that if what you are doing isn't working, then you need to try something else, so you need to plan for all circumstances and eventualities.

NLP Principle 4 - Take Action

NLP is all about seizing the moment and making positive changes to ones behaviour immediately. After all, the sooner you get started, the sooner you can enjoy the positive benefits of NLP within your organization.

Neuro Linguistic Programming can be used in all sorts of workplace environments. Those involved in sales can use NLP to encourage people to buy, or steer potential customers towards or away from a certain product. It can also be used when dealing with complicated situations or when handling difficult clients. NLP can also be used to help you achieve your career goals.
By thinking positive, and deciding what's important to you, you can work towards reaching your targets.

Now you know more about NLP, how could it help your sales staff and other staff be more productive, and build rapports with customers?

The Physical Power Of Changing the Way You Think! - Mark J Holland NLP Mind Coach

Take care of your body with steadfast fidelity. The soul must see through these eyes alone, and if they are dim, the whole world is clouded.”
¬- Goethe

You know that changing the way you think improves your mental health. But did you know it can also improve your physical health? The power of your thoughts is so strong, it can actually affect the way your body behaves and improve a host of physical ailments- or even bring you from the brink of death. It has been discovered 70% of our medical conditions are affected by our thinking.

Take Christopher Reeve. The actor who will be forever remembered for his powerful performance as Superman will also be remembered for his remarkable recovery after a horse-riding accident left him completely paralysed. Yet not only did Reeve live far longer than any doctor predicted, he made great strides toward recovery and was able to move parts of his body that were pronounced forever lost to him before his death in 2004. Reeve survived for nine years after the accident and proved he truly was a super man.

How did he do it? He changed his thinking, thinking with possibility also known as positive thinking. According to researchers who analysed his case, Reeve’s optimistic attitude and can-do mindset were almost entirely responsible for the unparalleled level of recovery he experienced.

When you banish negative thoughts from your mind, your physical health responds tremendously. It has long been known that there is a correlation between emotional and physical health; often referred to as the “mind-body connection.” Improving your outlook, changing the way you are thinking now, and practicing positive thinking strengthens your mind-body connection and makes you healthy, even to the point of extending your life.

Studies have shown that depression and negative thought decreases antibodies and leaves you more open to infection and disease. Those who are angry, bitter, unhappy or stressed exhibit weaker immune responses to vaccines; take longer to heal; are more susceptible to colds and viruses; and experience stronger symptoms.

There is documented scientific evidence that electrical activity in the brain related to emotion has a direct effect on the body’s ability to heal and fights off disease. Negative thoughts produce a surge of activity in the right prefrontal cortex, which brings about a weak immune response; while positive thoughts produce activity in the left prefrontal cortex and strengthens immune response. It is true: happy people are healthier, simply because they are happy!

Transforming your mind with the help of an NLP Mind coach and a positive thought program may also possess the ability to protect you from Alzheimer’s or other degenerative aging diseases. Because part of the process of positive thinking involves a continual quest for self-improvement and encourages you to stay mentally active, your mind will be in better shape as you age and you will be less susceptible to degenerative disease such as Alzheimer’s, osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis. A sharp mind helps to maintain a sharp body.

Don’t underestimate the power of positive thinking in regards to your own health. You can think yourself healthy; and you will find that you have more energy, fewer colds, and an increased vitality. Perhaps some day, science will discover a way to inject happiness as a means to combat disease. (I know a few people who could use this right now) Until then, we will have to be responsible for creating our own happiness.

Change your thinking, Change your Results.

Transform your mind and begin the journey of self discovery toward having the life you have always wanted. Organise a telephone NLP Mind Coaching Session with Me TODAY!
